                 Releasing the Supernatural

                          September 24, 2014

Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Authority is not something capriciously given. Authority...true authority, is an entrusting. It is given to one and directly connected to accountability.

Why would Jesus give us something that we not expected to use. In the Lord’s prayer, the words are voiced by the Lord telling us that God’s kingdom would be “on earth as it is in heaven”. In that statement is a release of the supernatural that was intended to cross the boundaries of accepted dimensional thinking and bring into this reality things that are accepted and ordinary in the realms of God.

The key statement we want to embrace here in Matthew 28 is found in verse 18 where Jesus tells his disciples “ALL AUTHORITY”. All authority was given to him that he might impart that same gift to every believer and empowers him to do things that are seen only in the heavenly realms, but through the release of that power can be done through man in the here and now.

Released and enlightened

II Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

I can possess a library of knowledge, but if it printed in a language I do not understand, it is worthless to me. The Holy Spirit is needed for us to truly understand scripture. One of his descriptions we see in the Bible is that of “teacher”.  With so many translations of the Bible, it would almost seem absurd that anyone could not understand Holy Scripture. fully gain an understanding of how God’s power applies to every life that calls upon the name of Jesus, The Holy Spirit must be employed to receive the revelation of how we may obtain access to His many gifts.

It is impossible to operate in power and in error at the same time. The Bible speaks of false or lying signs and wonders. We know that the enemy is a master of parlor tricks. He can emulate signs and wonders of his own with the exception that the resultant of those things he does are lifeless and temporal. When God does a work, he does a lasting work. This is why we need the reproof and correction in our life. Proverbs 3:12 says that God chastises those whom he loves. He does not do it for meanness or spite; he does it to keep us on the straight and narrow. We can only release the supernatural from our lives when we are operating in His power...thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Released and authorized

Luke 10:17-20 NKJV

Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.” And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Authority is an incredible thing. Even in earthly authority, we see a weight of responsibility that not only adds to the gravity of that authority, it also adds to its validity. I will never forget the first time I performed a marriage ceremony many years ago. It was the first time I recited the term, “by the power vested in me...I now pronounce you man and wife”.  It was the first time that it dawned on me that this minister thing afforded me the privilege to join two people in marriage. Actually, I acted as the representative for the law of the land and in so doing; I created a legal bond that changed two people’s lives forever. Here in Luke 10, the seventy returned with the discovery that when they prayed...that prayer contained a power that was available for them to release. Jesus was quick to remind them that the power was not the big deal. The real miracle was that God has redeemed us and validated us in heaven.

Without the validation of God, our lives literally mean nothing. This is the solemn importance of our responsibility of bearing the Gospel and carrying out the great commission. You might think of it as the commissioning of a police officer. With the commission comes a badge, a gun, a whistle and a uniform...but those are just the tools of the trade. The thing that really makes them police men and women is the validation of the government authority that allows them to function in those tools legally and they are bound to uphold the law with honor. It’s really pretty sobering.  God has given us access into the supernatural to heal, deliver, preach, and operate in His gifts...but the real star of the show is His validation and authorization.

Released and empowered

Luke 24: 45-49 NKJV

And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  And you are witnesses of these things.  Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

Understanding is the key to releasing the supernatural into yours and everyone else’s lives. God did not give us the great commission to “let George do it”. It was a mass deployment given to the church. It was passed on to us and entrusted to the church that we might usher all into the kingdom. The reason you are here serving God is not because you all of a sudden got a burst of inquisitiveness and your astute seeker personality let you to the truth. It may have begun with your curiosities....but you may rest assured that God used some obedient soul to lead you to freedom. God has not given any of us the gift of self-revelation.

Jesus opened the understanding of the disciples. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of our understanding that we may walk in confidence that this power is real and that we have access to everything that God has given us. The Promise of the Father, The Holy Spirit, is still with us leading us, guiding us, teaching us, and comforting us as we walk this road that leads from the natural that we are born in and take us to the realm of God’s miraculous.
