              Last things first

                             December 28, 2014

For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it — lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? (Luke 14:28-31 NKJV)

Stop it.....don't go back

Romans 11:29-32

For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all. (Romans 11:29-32 NKJV)

Living in Yesterday is the surest way to curtail the new things that God wants to do in your life. This is why Satan loves the tongue of the gossip. It revives the things of yesterday and regurgitates them upon the ears of today to keep the message of the future from resounding.

If your life can be isolated into yesterday by feelings of guilt, inadequacy, condemnation, and accusation, then God’s best can never filter effectively into your life. The chain of events goes like fall into an area of weakness. Either through the guilt that Satan brings into your life through your own conscience or by the input of another, feelings of being undeserving and unworthy begin to take root. Once those things are intact, it begins to nullify the gifts, callings, and promises that God has made covenant with you. Because you have a free are the only one who can shut down the process.

Begin to use words of affirmation that you are good enough. God loves you more than he recognizes your shortcomings. Acknowledge to the Lord that you understand that His gifts and callings are not subject to being removed or receive remorse over by God.  Accept only his best and reject the lies that would speak anything else over your life.

Forgive and forget

Ephesians 4:25-32

Therefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:25-32 NKJV)

From disease to disaster, the things we hold the inability of releasing forgiveness of others affects us in ways we do not even know. Medical science gives real credence to the concept that emotions such as envy, strife, hatred, and lack of forgiveness play a vital part in diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disorders. In fact, it has been proven that those emotions release chemicals in the brain that trigger abnormal activities in the body.

If you notice, the scripture makes reference to letting “he who stole, steal no longer”. The plain truth is that jealousies and hatred are not healthy for you or anyone else. And the less we have control over it the more it adversely affects us in our physical being. If you are looking to make health changes for 2015, a great place to start might be an examination of the heart to release those we have made offense with that we might be set free from their control.

Releasing others from offenses does not simply make peace with that other person; it also activates the increase of peace in your own life. The additional benefit to this dynamic is that the more at peace you are the less likely you will be to get yourself back into a similar situation. Some would call it spiritual growth, but it is more attune to being a spiritual reality.

Finish your yesterdays....anticipate your tomorrows

Isaiah 43:16-19

Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea And a path through the mighty waters, Who brings forth the chariot and horse, The army and the power (They shall lie down together, they shall not rise; They are extinguished, they are quenched like a wick): “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:16-19 NKJV)

God does not live in the former things. He was a part of the former, but His life is found in the present and in the future.  When God called Lott and his family out of the debauchery of Sodom and Gomorrah, He made the decree that no one was to look back...which we know from reading the Old Testament that Lott’s wife could not resist the temptation. The valuable lesson is that if You want to see greater things in 2015, you will need to put 2014 away. The only thing the past is good for is learning from. We can extract good memories and valuable lessons...and that is all.

Many who are expecting to see greater in 2015 will be disappointed because they never effectively closed out the books on the previous year. What is done is done. You can do nothing about the past, but the best you can hope for is to effectively be in the place where you can change the picture of what the coming New Year will hold.

Don’t worry about the desert behind you....instead, be looking ahead. Be vigilant. Be continually looking and expecting God’s best in what he will do. But to effectively see that happen, you will have to snap the lock on the past. Cut your losses and look ahead to what God will do in the new season.
