His Presence...Our Practicality

     His Presence...our practicality

Proverbs 3:1-8 NKJV

My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.

We can have God’s presence beaucoup, but if it is not making an impact upon our everyday lives, what good is it?

The WHOLE purpose of God’s presence is to effect such a change in “who” we are personally that it spills over into our community and influences it for God. The ultimate goal of his presence is as it has been since creation and that is to radically impact our culture.

Throughout scripture, God upset apple carts of all kinds. He upset religious apple carts, secular apple carts, and even cultural apple carts. All through the New Testament, Jesus and later His disciples, with the equipping of God’s presence through the dunamis power of the Holy Ghost changed entire cities and were still making their mark upon humanity. His desire is that His indwelling presence make a lasting impact upon the world in which we live today...

Changes in our worship life

Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJV

“The Spirit of the Lord God  is upon Me, Because the Lord  has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those  who  are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord , And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord , that He may be glorified.”

One of the most moving worship songs of the last 20 years was penned by a man named Matt Redman and called “The Heart of Worship”. In the song, the lyrics beg forgiveness for what man has made of worship...performance, talent, art....when what God wants is to hear our hearts sing out passionately to him.

If we learn from David the Psalmist, we see a man who had become shameless in his worship. He no longer cared what people thought, he just burned to touch God.

Scripture calls David a man after God’s own heart. This is no doubt the quality that so touched God.

A church that touches God is a church that will be effective in reaching the lost for Christ. People are looking for something real. They have wised up to religion....honesty and sincerity are the only two physical attributes that will reach man now. When unbelievers feel God’s presence, there is no arguing doctrine anymore. They simply want what is real.

Changes in our community

Acts 8:4-8 NKJV

Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.

I think if I hear of or read one more lame outreach idea, I will scream... Most outreach is based off of freebie mentality. It does not address Filling a spiritual need, only satisfying a physical whim.

Check it out...the disciples here in Acts 8 did not bribe people with a bottle of water...or a chicken dinner...or a free car wash,  or anything. What created the stir was signs and wonders. As I mentioned earlier. People are smart..they have seen everything religion has to offer....except healings, deliverances, true salvations....those things require the Habitation of God upon a ministry.

As we walk in the fullness of God’s presence we will not need to turn to car dealership tactics to spread the message of the goodness of the Lord....His presence is a fire that goes before us.

Changes in our culture

Isaiah 61:6-11 NKJV

But you shall be named the priests of the Lord , They shall call you the servants of our God. You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, And in their glory you shall boast. Instead of your shame you  shall  have double honor, And instead  of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; Everlasting joy shall be theirs. “For I, the Lord , love justice; I hate robbery for burnt offering; I will direct their work in truth, And will make with them an everlasting covenant. Their descendants shall be known among the Gentiles, And their offspring among the people. All who see them shall acknowledge them, That they are the posterity whom the Lord has blessed.” I will greatly rejoice in the Lord , My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

A true habitation of the Lord is one that effects a lasting change upon a people. We just crossed the 496th (1517) anniversary of the protestant reformation. This was not simply the ranting of malcontents within a church, but grievances responding to error in the church that effected a change that is nearly 500 years old and still going strong. God’s word will not be compromised by religion no matter how big it is. All that to say that God desires to change our very culture to be drawn to Him.

We concern ourselves with politics and big business, but these things are but a pittance compared to the master plan of God for his church. Governments have come and gone from the earth. They of no consequence to God...his concern is for the individual soul. He is not concerned for our nationality or our economic agenda...his interests lie in our future in heaven with him.

He did not send Jesus to “straighten the world out”...He himself told us that he did not come here to judge the world, but to save it.  If we the church get our values situated and understand the importance of His presence in regard to seeing a change in our culture...then His will is done...that NO ONE should perish, but that ALL would have eternal life.
