John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1:1-5 NKJV)

The ever present conflict between dark and light is evident all around us. Each day we live now is a new and even starker display of the dichotomous nature of this fallen world. As believers we see with even more evident conviction how badly we all need Jesus. John chapter one is the most succinct sum-ups of how this whole thing works. If you never saw it will see it now. There is light...and there is dark. God is that light. His light illuminates the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t get it. Its only hope is to be consumed by the light.

God’s love for us is so deep and so intense, that he literally pierces darkness to get to us. He is jealous for us...we must be jealous for a relationship with him, because the only way we will win this world is to display a relationship with God before the world that makes it envious.

God is jealous

Exodus 34:12-17

Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, and you take of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods. “You shall make no molded gods for yourselves. (
Exodus 34:12-17 NKJV)
Plain and simple, God is jealous for us because we belong to him. We are his creation. Painters, artisans, and songwriters will know what I am talking about, but there is a special attachment between the artist and the artist’s creation. The words of a writer are each like his children that he specifically poured over and watched come to life and grow. Every brushstroke of an artist is the line in the face of a person he pulls out of himself and onto canvas.  Scripture even uses the example of the potter and the clay to describe how special this relationship between creator and creation is to God.

Worshipping other gods is the highest form of rejection in Jehovah’s kingdom. He gave it all for us, and the most important thing to Him is the love and devotion of his creation. He does not see it as betrayal, but as selling ourselves short and walking in that darkness that he paid such a premium price to win our redemption.

Most of us cannot imagine ourselves making molded or graven images to another God, yet the distractions of this life...the love of the things of this world....the self-importance that comes with our supposedly busy lives, all fashion idols in our hearts just as surely as if we were melting down gold to forge an image of a false God.

Be jealous for God

Psalms 63:1-8

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me. (Psalms 63:1-8 NKJV)

If you search the scriptures, you will clearly see where God loves ownership. He loves to own our hearts...and it really trips his trigger when we take ownership of Him as our Lord, Our God, Our Savior, Our deliverer. He is our Jehovah Jirah...our provider....Our Jehovah Nissi...our banner....Jehovah Rohe....Our shepherd....Jehovah Tsidkenu....our righteousness....Jehovah M’Kaddesh...our sanctifier.....Jehovah Shalom...our peace. He is our Jehovah Rapha...our healer.

David displayed what is probably the greatest template of being jealous for a relationship with God. Man must learn who God is before he will be able to grasp how much God means to him. Relationship is getting to know someone at a level deeper than simple recognition. Most of humanity will not get out of bed to seek God, because they are already in bed with the world. Jealousy requires a certain degree of obsession. Being obsessed with God is a good thing. Counting on Him, relying upon Him, Trusting in Him, is not a wasted vain hope, because he returns the attention. When a man and a woman become obsessed with each other in this life....we call that “in love”. These two people become so obsessed that they make a public commitment before God that they will stay with each a life together...have and raise children together...and go through everything...even the worst ...together.

Many psychiatrists would call this an unhealthy relationship, but God calls it love....and He is all for it. The love of a man for a woman is a reflection of the love God has for us...and that we in return should have for him.

Have a relationship with God that the world envies...

Acts 26:24-29

Now as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad!” But he said, “I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak the words of truth and reason. For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since this thing was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe.” Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.” And Paul said, “I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains.” (
Acts 26:24-29 NKJV)

The only effective witness is one that comes from the heart and not the mouth. We are seeing a day by day progression of the end of religion in this old world. The heathens are hip to the jive and they’re just not buying it anymore. They see the abuse that has come from the laid up wealth of ancient denominations. They are watching as Pentecostal evangelicals lavish themselves in palaces and live in extravagance, milking people out of money to finance their obscene lifestyles. They see the sexual misconduct of clergy, the one-sided holiness of ministry and wonder, why in the world would I want any part of that? The answer....the church needs to fall in love with Jesus and we need to do it now. We need to put down the sick dogs of religion and move forward as a people who share the Gospel in power because we have been in the presence of the King.

We need a relationship that the world envies rather than a religious system that the world criticizes. We need to get to know this God we all bark about and get serious with him. The time for exchanging class rings is’s time to get married and be a bride. Its time to get googally eyed silly in love with The Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost! That only comes from relationship.

I’m talking about a relationship with God that makes the world jealous to know him. You will not argue your point to convincing on facebook. You will not tweet people to will not convince them with will make them crazy with envy when they see a relationship that they wish they had. Everyone on this earth is lonely for God...they just don’t know it yet. There is a cavernous hole in every human’s heart that only God will fill...but they haven’t figured out what that is yet. Your relationship with God is not cultivated, it is surrendered to . It is not a hole you dig, it is a cave in you stand over. The House of Joy needs to be that place of a cave in, where we just all go under with God together. This place needs to be a light on a dark highway where people are drawn not by its sign or its amenities, but by His presence. People shouldn’t want to go to your church because it’s cool....but because it’s their fix. They are desperate for a touch from God.
