         Changed by His Presence

Psalm 51:10-13

“10  Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11  Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. 13  Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You.” (Ps 51:10-13 NKJV)

This can be considered the prayer of desperation for God.

It is a prayer so fervent so as to desire the intervention of God into our very personage. We are asking here to be essentially changed at the base and core value of who we are.

Look at the words...Create.....Renew.....Restore...Uphold....

The end result of this elemental change is to lead others to Him and allow God to use us to point to His presence.

Not Stretched but Split

Matt 27:50-54

“50 ¶  And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51  Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52  and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53  and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54  So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!"” (Mt 27:50-54 NKJV)

This cry from the Lord was the dividing line of Old Testament government and New Testament Church.

Examine with me what happens here. He cries out again with a loud voice. This triggers creation itself into violence It rends the veil of the temple (the curtain of separation between human Imperfection and God’s perfect love) and tears it...rips it from top to bottom that it cannot only not be used again, it is destroyed.

Earth moved...rocks split......graves opened....the dead rose....a major creative thing happened here. It was as if God said aloud...NOTHING will separate my love from my children ever again.

We get a little stretched in this life and we have a meltdown...we are ready to hang it up. God did not move earth so we could display our drama every time things get rough. He split rocks and tore the veil of separation that we might walk in victory with Him ever at our side.

Not Reformed but Transformed

Romans 12:2-3

“2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 3  For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” (Ro 12:2-3 NKJV)

Most of us think like reformationists. When we blow it, we vow to change...but most of us never go to God with the intention of letting him forever be TRANSFORMED.

Reformation is to simply change on your own will. It is a promise to do better...I will reform...I will change. TRANSFORMATION....is the involuntary act of being essentially remade into something else. When God’s Spirit transforms us, we are no longer a fixed version of what walked in the door...but we are a completely new thing re made by the hands of God.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2Co 5:17 NKJV)

Not added to, but Filled

1Kings 8:10-11

“10  And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11  so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.” (1Ki 8:10-11 NKJV)

In my drinking days, I remember that I was a mixed drink man. It started with “and” drinks...Bacardi and Coke.....Jack and Coke.....Bourbon and Seven......Gin and Seven.

Then, there came a day when I graduated to “mixed drinks” that mixed two kinds of booze...my favorites were Martinis.....Gin and Vermouth.

It started with adding something strong to something I found flavorful....Then it progressed to something that was totally poisonous....Gin...just a step up from wood grain alcohol....Vermouth...the word itself means “Wormwood”. It is a dry wine that is quite intoxicating to the human body.

Man is an adder...if he gains weight he adds a little exercise to his life or adds artificial sweetener or adds new foods to his diet to replace others.

If his spiritual man is in need...he adds a little God...finds himself a church....puts in a little prayer time.

God never intended to be an additive in mans’ life, but to consume his life that He may systemically change his identity from that of mortal flesh to the image of Christ in Him.

1Kings 8 is not the story of what happens when a little God is added to temple worship, but what happens when the very Spirit of God invades an area of creation and commandeers the airspace.

Likewise, our lives were never meant to be a glancing bus stop for God to drop by.....but temples of  the Holy Spirit...made for His indwelling presence.
