The Pastor's Journal of House of Joy Church

And so begins August 2015

Monday Morning, August 3, 2015

This Past Sunday, our congregation at House of Joy had the honor and privilege to hear from our co-pastor and my amazing wife of 34 years, Leslie Bailey Roques. She preached a powerful word on communion and its indispensable relevance to our time here on earth and living for God with an understanding of the empowerment given us through that holiest of sacraments. I, with her kind permission, intend to post the notes to this blog so that all who are in our extended internet family might be blessed with the same awesome word that was shared here in our sanctuary at House of Joy.

In other news, this past weekend, Leslie and I had the difficult task of assisting some dear friends and members of our church in saying goodbye to their stillborn son. I prayed earnestly all week for something to say that would be of comfort, strength and solace to the family who gathered in our church Saturday night. One thing that I experience nearly every waking hour of my life (and even unknowingly as I sleep) is Jesus never fails. Though this life is fleeting and fickle, God never sleeps, nor doth he slumber. He has given us mercy and grace to live in this fragile life and make our way to the finish line and eternity with Him. I wanted to pass along to you the thoughts that he gave me for that special time.

God bless and love you!

     Say hello to say goodbye

“To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace. What profit has the worker from that in which he labors? I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 NKJV

No life without reason...we are all here as part of a master plan designed by the master. It is not ours to question the design of the Master, only to trust love lay our lives before Him...and know that the grand landscape of creation is His to have for His good pleasure. We are to trust, knowing that His life is the life that endures every trial, every pain, every challenge...and His amazing plan will be unfolded to us in due season.

No life without purpose...we learn from the life experience of everyone, no matter how long or short our earthly time. There is reason behind everything in God’s creation. It did not seem in the best of sense to us to send an only son for a world unaware of our need for Him. In the grand design, we would be in a desperate situation without the price that Jesus paid. From the greatest to the small...we all have an integral part in God’s plan.

No life without cost... Our lives are an investment. God plants a spark that ignites into a fire that affects everyone we encounter. Nothing ventured...nothing gained is more than simply a colloquial is our stake in the responsibility given us as children of God. It is one way His creation worships Him. Costless Christianity is becoming en vogue in these times. People who endure costs are sometimes seen as failing or faltering. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If we trust the picture of God’s Kingdom that he paints through each of us, we better understand that the costs in this life are simply rites of passage to what great things lay ahead. There is no great gain without great loss. Our scriptures prove this on every page. It is sometimes hard to accept costs, but they are a part of this life.

No life without Jesus ...we cope with this mortal life. We say hello only to say goodbye in the flesh realm. But God...But God paid the ultimate price that this life might only be the temporary portal, the greenroom that leads us to true lasting the life that has overcome the sting of death....the life that is only found in Jesus.

We all say hello in this life only to say goodbye. The only difference is time intervals. Some have ninety years, some 90 minutes...some only seconds. For all who are in Jesus, that goodbye leads to an eternal welcome into a heaven that knows no sorrow. There is but one hello to those who enter into God's courts who are in Christ Jesus....
